Gatsby Blog 3

The Great Gatsby is a book written by F Scott Fitzgerald in 1924, right after World War 1. At this time the economy of the country was at the highest it had ever been, many people were buying luxury goods, living the American dream. In the book The Great Gatsby, we are presented with many characters. I am going to be analyzing and deciding if I would marry, kiss or kill them. The characters in which I will be focusing on will be: Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, Myrtle Wilson and George Wilson.

I would marry Jordan and Gatsby because they both of them demonstrate to be very open characters. I would marry Jordan because she is a self-centered, independent woman. Although in the book Jordan is described as a cold person that always wants to be in the superior position. In chapter 3, Nick uses the word ‘dishonest’ to describe Jordan. He says “she’s a fundamentally dishonest person” he also mentioned that he is aware that she cheated on her first golf tournament in order to win. Despite Jordan being a person that always wants to be the leader or in a higher position, I still choose to marry her over the other characters in the book. I would like to marry Jay Gatsby because he came from nothing and through the book he was admired by so many. Even though in the book he is described as a person that is somewhat “obsessed” with Daisy Buchanan, I see this as him demonstrating that he is a positive person that will fight for what he wants, a quote that proves this is “I knew that when I kissed this girl I would be forever wed to her.” When Gatsby says this, it shows that he is a person that will never give up on anything without fighting for it first and that is a quality I would want the person I marry to have.

I would kiss Daisy Buchanan and George Wilson because they both show to be very respectful and well mannered characters in The Great Gatsby. To start off, I would kiss Daisy because in the book Nick describes her as “beautiful and charming” I choose to kiss and not marry her because in the book she shows to be a careless person that does not care about anything else but money and materialistic things and I would not want to marry a person that would only want me for my money and luxury stuff and not for me. In chapter one she speaks to Nick and she says that if she ever has a baby she hopes it would be a girl. She states “I hope she’ll be a fool- that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” This shows that she is a character that depends on people and I would not want someone like that to spend the rest of my life with, this is why I only chose to kiss her. With this being said, I would kiss Wilson because I consider him a very humble and hard working character. In the beginning of the book, he is described as a “beaten man” meaning he works so hard that looks very pale and worn out. I think Wilson did not deserve his wife to cheat on him because he clearly works very hard in order to provide for their house. Even though he ends up killing Gatsby at the end of the book, he did it because he believed Gatsby was the person who killed his wife, this still proves that his wife did not deserve him.

I would kill Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan because they are both cheaters. I would kill Myrtle because through the book she pretends to be something she is not, she is loud and always makes herself the center of attention wherever she goes. In chapter 2, she expresses regret for marrying Wilson. She states that she married him because he was a gentleman but she did not realize he did not have any money and that he was not “good enough” for him. I decided to kill Myrtle because she puts money in front of everything, even her marriage and I would not want to kiss or marry a person that acts that way. I would also kill Tom for the same reasons, he is married but he still has an affair outside his marriage. Nick refers to Tom as “Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward” this means that Tom is a very arrogant character that wants everything to go the way he wants it, he wants to have control over everything, to make him feel powerful. I decided to kill him because I would not want to kiss or marry him.

In summary, there were many characters in this book but many of them had character flaws. The way they acted throughout the book inspired me to make the choices I made when deciding whether I would marry, kiss or kill them.
