The writer's use of language in both paragraphs has two different effects on the reader. In both paragraphs the writer uses descriptive and imaginary language to help the reader feel as if they were in the place that is being described. In paragraph 1 the writer is describing what he thinks the place looks like and his use of words such as, “coolness” and “colour.” I describe coolness as a nice temperature, not being too hot or too cold, just the perfect temperature. The use of these descriptive words help the reader imagine the place that is being described. In paragraph 2, the writer gets to the place and he uses descriptive words and phrases such as, “human excrement” and “disorder.” Disorder is often defined as a “mess” or “chaos''; this also helps the reader imagine what the writer is seeing and get a feel for the place. The writer’s use of language had a great effect on the reader's mood in both paragraphs.
The mood is different in both paragraphs. As the reader reads paragraph 1, the mood can be imagined as cool, fresh and happy. In paragraph 1 the writer has a tone that helps the reader’s mood or the feel for the place being described as a peaceful and calm place, as the reader’s descriptive words create that mood for the reader. In paragraph two the mood that is set for the reader is that horrible and disgusting, as the writer uses specific words to describe what he is seeing, the writer uses words like “human excrement” at a store, which is disgusting for a place that they expected to look very calm and peaceful. At the end of paragraph 2, the writer states, “Buses packed with men with red-dyed beards were going in the direction from where we had come from” meaning the people were leaving because they did not enjoy what they saw at the place being described. This sets a feeling for the reader and helps the reader understand that the place is terrible which is why people were leaving when the author had just gotten there.
